Hi all,

I saw this wooden carving of a carp on the Nihonto message board and thought it might make a decent reference for anyone wanting to do their own version of this fish.

Thanks for these great pics, Ford. I like the carp very much.
I started carving a boxwood netsuke version of it. About 9 cm long.

Fantastic Ko, :P

I was hoping someone would take up the challenge as it is such a nice model and the images make very good reference.
I really look forward to seeing the work progress....if you would be kind enough to share the process.

thanks and regards,

Ford

An updat on the carp. I wanted to insert some kind of eyes made of amber or horn. But I carved the eyes to see how it looks I am not sure what to do. Perhaps I leave it like this.
Next are the scales and fins and tail.

Another update, only the details on the vins and tail to do. And sanding, colouring, etc.

The colour is quite lovely too. What did you use on this piece?

Top view:

Bottom view: I didn't carve a himotoshi. I decided to leave it as an okimono. It felt like spoiling the piece by carving the holes. And at 9 cm it is a little large for a netsuke.

The colouring is an extensive proces involving nitric acid, dylon dyes, and black ink. More details can be found on my website under "Example".

Hello everyone,

I carved this carp a second time. Now intended to be an Okimono.
This one is 12 cm long and is coloured with KMnO4. This wears off on the high places so you get a nice contrast.
The eyes are made of white and black horn.
