Thank you for the tutorial! I have a brief question about the sanding mandrel. I am not familiar with that kind of sanding tool Can you post a photo of it, in parts and together for sanding? Thank you.

I appreciate reading about the processes you do to bring such work to completion. It is very time consuming and risky, I believe!

Hi Janel,
Easy to describe. It is in the last picture. A mandrel that fits in a hanging motor chuck and has a vertical slit through which a strip of sandpaper is fitted. It is used for sanding the inside of rings.
Cheers, Hans

Is this tool found through jeweler's catalogs? I have not seen one on my forays into the void... Looks very useful.

Hi Janel, you can find these mandrels in jewelers catalogs Split Mandrels and Slotted Mandrels. Names are funny and misleading sometimes when it comes to products as one place will call a tool one thing and another place will call it something different, I've found this to be frustrating when looking for tools and price comparing.

Hi Janel and all others,

RE: source for slotted mandrels

If you have the 2008 Rio Grande Tools & Equipment Catalog, check out page 341. There are a number of slotted mandrels shown as well emery paper designed for slotted mandrels. They are used by jewelers to clean up the inside of rings.

For those reading this posting after 2008: check the product index in the back of the Rio Grande catalog (www.riogrande.com)

Hope everyone is enjoying the long Labor Day weekend.

Have fun carving,

E George
