Hi there,

There seemed so much interest and so many different ideas expressed in Antonio's post as to methods of transfering a drawing or design from paper to the object (wax in this case) that I thought I'd start a new thread.

I have arrived at using templates cut from my paper with a scapel to trace around on wax to do relief carvings - I think it's easier than trying to work through the paper with needle holes or the like. Here are some photos that show what I mean.

What is your method?
And when going into 3D ( in the round ) do you have special ways for that?
I have been drawing on boxwood, carving and then drawing some more as I go - seems to work, but I just haven't been able to spend enough time to progress very far in that medium.

I do about the same thing as what you do Magnus. Except that when I'm working on something that starts out flat, I tape my pattern to it with clear shipping tape to secure it while cutting around or through my paper pattern. For things I want to use more than once, you can add another layer of tape to lift it off for future use, even if it's got small pieces. With 3D stuff, I tend to pattern cut the outlines, then draw and cut like what you described. If I must use a pattern on a curved or wavy surface, I sometimes wet the paper first, and wind a piece of string round it till it dries, then use tape as usual.
