Kyoto Seishu Netsukekan

This is the only museum in Japan dedicated to netsuke. They are displayed in a late 18th century Samurai residence in downtown Kyoto. The museum contains 1,800 works from the collection of KINOSHITA Muneaki. Approximately 800 works are on display, four times a year, for two weeks to one month of time. In my opinion, this is the place to see netsuke if you are planning a trip to Japan. Please check the web site and plan your journey around these dates.

We spent several hours there, slowly viewing and returning to view again each of these small wonders! The Samurai residence, its Japanese garden, and quiet ambiance with tatami mats and stocking footed guests, all provide a contemplative atmosphere for viewing and considering the netsuke on display. This day was a pinnacle event for me.

Wonderful that you could coordinate your trip to their limited opening schedule. It wasn't open in June when I was there, so I have to settle for the website :(
