What I'm looking for is actually branches, thumb thickness and around 12 to 18 inches.

Anyone know of a source?

Never dealt with these folks but they're close by. Probably cheaper shipping.

Thanks. I have an inquiry in with them, but haven't heard back yet.

Bowling balls have been traditionally made from lignum. Now that they are made from resin of some kind, a lot of the old ones are simply abandoned. I have come across a sell-out years ago at a bowling club, they were selling them for 1 (that's one) dollar each. Unfortunately I happened to be a bit late, so there was only the solitary last one left. But it's worth keeping an eye on e-bay for them.

Here's a source in your size requirements.
