This carving is apart of cane . the head of cane has two part :
1- lion head (lapis lazuli)
2- Silver/Gold frame for lion head
I just carved the lion head and unfortunately have not any Idea about the rest of cane(I am not owner).
I guess this cane is somewhat precious and the owner never use it for walking

.
OK first step for carving is drawing the lion face and removing extra part as you can see in below Images.

From head on :
As you can see this carving is very simple and easy . One of mu friend gave me this Rubble as a gift.
the quality of stone is soso but is useful for cane. Totally the Lapis Azuli stone carving is easy it is not very hard (5 mohs) and something like ivory a little harder. The best source of Lapis is Afghanistan that this country is located east of Iran and we can easily obtain it . the price of rough stone with respect to quality differ from 10$ to 100$ per Kg .
I used Lapis as base stone for this carving because this stone in our culture is very important not only for carving but also for painting . you can find existence of it in precious carving and painting from
"Achaemenid" Empire (550–330 BC) till now.
anyway I hope this give you new Idea.
