I've made this into a stand-alone thread as the original insert into Janel's thread was detracting from her intent. If anyone has any names/web addresses or books/auctions/dealers referring to recognised carvers I've missed, please put up a post about it and I'll chase it up. The list, so far, is up-to-date as of 2003.
Drawing it up has thrown up a number of issues. How do you define a netsuke-shi? Is it somebody who has an established reputation and does it as a full-time occupation? Somebody in training? Somebody who makes it a central hobby, but has other work? Someone who has sold their first piece? Someone who's recognised by patrons and dealers? Someone who is in museum collections? Someone who pursues carving as one of a number of arts? And what about all those anonymous Chinese carvers, some of whom are excellent in their own right?
Anyway, here's the list so far: (updated 30.3.10)
