Can deer and elk antler be straightened? I am making knife handles and have cut out all of the good straight sections in the antler I have available. Any suggestions

Terry

I'd love to know a bit more about that, too.
I know that the Lapps (Northern Scandinavia) have been repeatedly described as straightening reindeer antlers for tools, and I think I came across North American Inuits being mentioned in the same way. I tried it myself, soaking and then heating, but no success. That doesn't mean anything, though. There must be a way, if we only knew it...

Antler can be straightened by boiling it in water. Make a jig to hold it in the desired shape and don't let it sit in the boiling water too long. Remove it using pliers, or something to keep from burning your fingers and put it quickly into the jig.

BTW, if you need to buy antler, go to Moscow hide and fur. They have a large selection and prices are reasonable.

Thanks guys.
Now all I need to figure out how to clamp antlers (spikers) that are double curved. I'll get there, though.

Hey all...
I'm new here, and I found this place while researching a "outlet" for Moose Antlers.
I have a bunch I've found this year, here in the Maine woods.. and I'm not sure where I can sell them.
Give me a shout with idea's..

Thanks all.
