Kia Ora from Australia just wanted to introduce myself and say hi :D

Kia Ora all,

My name is Ebony and I currently live on Kangaroo Island S.A but orginally from Tauranga New Zealand. My father used to carve tables, bones, and stone but since having a stroke 10 or so yrs ago has concentrated more on stone due to not fully recovering. His father was a Master Carver back in NZ, and carved meeting houses all over NZ.

I wasn't really around when my father carved, so don't have too much knowledge on the topic, and since he's in NZ and I'm in Australia I thought a forum would be the best place to start looking around and seeing what I'm getting myself into.

I would like to at this stage just look at it as a hobby and i'm looking at starting with stone, although I have no idea which would be the best to use over here. Dad uses Hinuera stone, but I don't know what the equivalent is over here, hence why i've joined to pick some brains.

So hopefully you'll see more of me around, I can't wait to take a read through the topics to see what beauty has been made.

Thank you for the introduction to your interest and your family's history of carving and work. Do you have any images of the work your father and his father have done? What is Hinuera stone?

Hi Ebony :)
I was born in S.A. around Adelaide. When I was young had a go at talc stone but apparently it not the best for your health. A friend of mine went down to Mt Gambier for a symposium and found out that limestone is a pretty good stone for sculpture etc.. Reasonably soft so that you can use the basic of tools to carve. She is a sculpter and said that this was what they were all carving. If you wanted to do small stuff like what is done in NZ (green stone) you could try to aquire some jade from Cowel in the north of the state as well as Opal from Cooperpeady as there is a tafe course up there on how to carve this as well at the O'halleran hill tafe southern district on the way to to Christies beach etc.. Ther is another stone but i dont know where to get it. Some times it was used in the old stone houses, it was made up of tiny shells and it could be saw'n with an ordinary wood saw.

hi ebany, welcome to the forum,
I am still a newbie , and a beginner carver. And live in victoria australia.
I totally relate to your comments Ron Scupham.

I have carved talc stone which is a good starter( wear a really good face mask, and donot forget to think of your work clothes as carriers of the stone dust, and place sensibly maybe straight into be washed after use.) I have under correct conditions assisted my local primary school art students to carve talcstone, and they loved working with it as it is so soft.

Next in line is S.A Mount Gambia limestone.
yep it sure is a great stone to carve. go for it!!
I will be back to carving it into a sculpture today.

I would suggest once you gain confidence in carving ,
to then move onto carving cowell black jade.
I work with it, (and other jade sourced elsewhere in the world) and recon the cowell jade is the best as it is so consistently hard, with not so many tricky inclusions.


I havent carved opal, and have yet to carve miniture sculptures, but will have a go later in the year with stone.

good luck ebany. carving is a wonderful artistic hobby, and can easily become additive, and the best thing is you never ever stop learning, and this forum is an amazing place to share and learn.

Kia Ora Ebz.

I started my carving career in Sydney, I now live back in Wellington. I've also just started carving stone and am looking forward to working more with this wonderful medium.

Australian Black Jade is a beautiful, but harder stone does require more specialised tools. Bone is a lot softer and you can get away with more common tools, but there is certainly something magical about stone, especially jade.

Good luck with your journey. I look forward to seeing some results.
