I haven't tried coconut shell, but I have seen it used as a carving material before. What comes to mind are 16th century cups and chalices, with silver fittings and coconut shell bowls. Europeans at the time of course saw the coconut as a rarity and therefore status symbol.. and it took carvings pretty well. I have never handled one of these cups though...anyway, let us know how your experiment works out!

How come I am unable to see the first two posts here? I am very interested in this topic.
all I see in the first two posts is a smiley face. Odd? Why is this?

Good Question. A former member had a change of mind about many of the posts, and chose to replace comments periodically with a smiley face. This action has caused great holes in the resource of information that the membership finds interesting and useful.
