  4. Ebony Inro

Hi all, Years ago I attempted to make a small ebony Inro. Having not handled an Inro myself then and without any guidance I did it the hard way, through what you might call "micro-carpentry. The bottom compartment alone for example is made of 9 different pieces. It was painstaking but fun and I think I've managed to get the hard part done. One side was inlaid while the other remains blank awaiting new ideas / inspiration, so it's still an unfinished project. Comments - suggestions are most welcome. Ebony, ivory, pine wood, pearl, mother of pearl, coral. 4.5cm. Regards / Ezz
  5. Inro

Thanks Tom for your post, Years ago I attempted to make a small Inro. I'll post it anyway ... Sincere regards Ezz

  7. C'est La Vie Netsuke

Hi all, An insect is eating away at an egg plant. The spider will snare and eat the insect. The bird will catch and eat the spider. Eventually when the bird dies it will be consumed by the earth and a new egg plant will emerge. Ivory, ebony, coral, mother of pearl. 6cm height.
  8. Bowling Ball Bowl

Dan, Your turning and inlay work is unbelievable. Please accept the ultimate compliment - my intent to buy a small lathe and start a project(s) inspired by your work. Cheers / Ezz
  9. Mushroom Netsuke

Hi, A mushroom netsuke that I carved a couple of years ago out of a modest stock of pre-ban ivory bits acquired in the early 1980's. 5cm x 3cm x 3cm. The mushroom stalk is a separately carved piece which was fitted with a serrated steel dowel before being epoxied, forming a natural Himotoshi. The lady bird on the top is a coral cabochon, The stylized bug on the stalk was in fact a chip in the material for which I carved a tiny ivory sliver then grafted it in place, carved it flush with the surface then scratched the legs and antenna. A weak tea solution was used to produce a light patina. Serious carvers might consider the carving of separate pieces then holding them together with dowels/epoxy - a bit of cheating perhaps ??? I'm really not quite sure. That's an issue about which I would appreciate any comments / guidance. Thanks / Ezz
  10. My Sandpaper Box

Hi, Picked this up from a flea market many years ago - wooden box not fleas I've been using it since to keep my cut to size sandpaper sheets and strips tidily in one place. It's very well constructed from solid walnut with brass fittings and my guesstimate is its 70 - 80 years old at least. I'm so glad I resisted the initial urge to sand it down and refinish it, as I believe the patina acquired over the years gives it more beauty and character. Please excuse the frivolous nature of this post, but it's about something that I really cherish. A good day to you all Ezz

  12. Mr Kelso, First few minutes of the movie "Men In Black" - the rookie ranger is mesmerized by seeing something his mind was totally unprepared for, and all he could was stare and blabber .. "what - what - what" ... Now I understand how he must have felt. This is a fantastic sculpture ... Best regards Ezz

  15. Soapstone Vs Bone

Hi Christophe Interesting thought, the one about actual hardness of bone. Apatite, aka calcium phosphate which is the mineral constituent of bone material has a hardness of 5 on Moh's scale. My guesstimate regarding bone hardness would be a tad less than 5 since bone tissue has a bit of collagen in it's composition. Hope this was helpful, although a bit late Regards Ezz
