Work In Progress Update

Recommended Posts

Its been awhile so here is the update with a brief description:

The secondary throat feathers have been drawn in and are being carved. These are not as strongly undercut nor as long as those just under the beak. The beak has been shaped to an almost finished state. I have carved around the eye to further define the head. A piece of painters taped has been cut to the exact shape of the eye and colored with a magic marker and white pencil. This will help define the character of the raven and gives me a better idea of how the finished bird will look. At this point the majority of the raven has been roughed in and the bird defined. My next decision is whether or not to include a detailed wing complete with feathers and how many feathers to carve under the throat feathers. Both of these details could completely alter the impression the carving presents.

Hi Mark,

It is good to see the progress. I think that the detail of feathers and wing should go farther, since the shape that remains uncarved in this photo does not make sense right now. The detail could fade into blank towards the edge, or could continue on to the edge with similar definition as there is now. I look forward to seeing what you choose to do!

Finished the Raven now named "The Guardian". Spent a lot of time debating about the carving of the wing and decided to leave it as is. This put the emphasis on the head and chest, this also eliminated the sense that realism was the goal (it wasn't). Also reworked the small chest feathers several times. Overall I am happy with the carving.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for sharing the completed Guardian with us. Your choices for the feather treatment works very well at guiding the eye up to the face from anywhere on the raven. I keep going back to look at enjoy it! I can imagine how interesting it would feel to follow the textures with my fingers.

I am happy you like the choice with the wing carving, just went with my instincts there. The framing, graphics and overall presentation was the result of three months worth of experiments. Recently started dealing with galleries again which is a totally different approach from previous work.
