Hans Meevis
This is an ele I carved first out of ferris purple carving wax and then cast with a spin casting machine in silver The piece was then finished off and polished and then immersed in Liver of sulfur and then 'area' polished. namely, to bring some high lights our and reduce others, so as to give more depth. He is 40mm long and 30mm high. I finally got off my bum and started finishing my pictorials on my website. One that might be of interest on this excellent site is: http://www.meevis.com/jewelry-making-class-carving-egret.htm Basically the same way the ele was made. Mark Strom
Hans, Nice elephant! My grandmother collected carved elephants from all over the world in all kinds of materials. My childhood fascination with them has never ceased. Great job on the hide and I like the movement. Was this a commission or a speculative work? Hans Meevis
Was this a commission or a speculative work? Hi Mark, speculative. I am going to make a miniature 3d picture with with all the trees and rocks and all made out of metal. Then mounted on a slab of stone. "The old solitary bull in the dry Savanah" bit. Hi Mr.B_art79, If you go to http://www.jewelercam.com/page4.html --the pictures will explain your question. And to the person who emailed me at meevis.com. Dang, I deleted your email in a 'senior' moment. Anyway, at http://www.meevis.com/jewelry-making-class-list.htm are all my tutorials so far. You are welcome to use them anyway you wish. magnus homestead
Hello Hans, I like your elephant very much. They are amazing creatures. Is this a deep bass relief or fully in the round. I was curious how you went about casting this. If it was fully 3D it would seem very massive to cast as a solid piece. Again - nice work - thank you! Hans Meevis
If it was fully 3D it would seem very massive to cast as a solid piece. Hi Magnus. I cast is with a spin casting machine. It is 3d. It only weighs 70 grams. I can cast up to 500 grams The ele is smaller than a matchbox Cheers Hans
magnus homestead
Hi Hans, Okay, I'm wondering what your sprue system looks like - I use a centrifuge also but don't like to go much over 2mm wall thickness unless I am using very large sprues or gates. By the way, I really liked your egret also. Thanks for sharing all this with us. Magnus
Hans Meevis
Okay, I'm wondering what your sprue system looks like Hi Magnus. For the ele it looked like this. ( sorry I had to draw it in somewhat crudely) The sprue was some 10mm thick and not tapered. I attached the sprue at that point so as to leave the trunk and legs on the outside, thus being subjected to the greatest centrifugal force. And much less of a mission to finish off. Normally I will use a tapered sprue and more than one as in this dolphin bangle Or I will use a lot of 2mm sprue's, as in this bangle I am currently busy with. I have been commissioned to carve an Onion (don't laugh ) as a pendant. Something to do with the layers of life I believe (grin) Anyway what I am going to do is take pictures on the whole process and put in on my web. I'll post when I am finished.
