Janel
Please post about various materials which you know are hazordous, poisonious, alergenic or simply dangerous to use. Also of importance to learn and share is what might happen to our bodies, what to look for if caution has not been observed, and what measures should be taken to prevent inhaling, absorbing or ingesting... If you know of web links to respectable sites with references to the materials/health issues, please include them in your posts. I want to see you all around for a few more decades, so learn and work with an attitude that helps you grow old. Wouldn't you like to see what we are doing farther along the path? Janel
Mollusc shell hypersensitivity pneumonitis. "Evidence of diffuse lung disease and systemic symptoms was found in (workers from a nacre-button factory). Nonspecific bronchial hyperreactivity was also found more frequently in patients with mollusc shell hypersensitivity pneumonitis." Excerpted from PubMed... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ which is... National Center for Biotechnology Information http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...0313&query_hl=4 I had a hard time finding the right keyword search words to come up with the above description. Once the first sentence (above) was used, a number of medical articles popped up. Scary material, broadly speaking... shell dust. The gist of exposure to the dusts is that the lungs respond in various manifestations to the dusts as they break down in the lungs and then those materials go on to cause systemic complications in the rest of your body. If you choose to work with shells or corals, please work with the material combined with water to keep the dusts contained. Clean up the work area with water and contain the wastes. Do not breath the dusts. Be cautious.
