Yuri Posted June 4, 2011 Report Share Posted June 4, 2011 A more-or less traditional nguru. These are often called nose flutes, but the nose part is a misunderstanding, they were not played that way. Traditional ones would have paua shell inlay for the eyes of the manaias instead of the pigtusk I used, and the figure, if there at all, would always be integral, carved from the same block of wood. The wood is rata, darkened in ammonia. (The bagpipe gargoyle is made from the same piece of wood, it gives you an idea of the difference in colour before and after.)
