Once a year

wow! a walking stick. You're pretty lucky! Since moving to Indiana (after living in Pennsylvania and New England) I'm seeing 5 or 6 praying mantises a year- the last one was a 1/2inch baby on my kitchen counter earlier this summer, but no walking sticks yet.

Do you find them in dense garden growth, or woods...?

Each occasion is unique...

on my sleeve while looking at a wild plum tree, on our old dog Sally, on the house garage door, dead in the middle of the road, on the door of the barn, this time, under the eaves next to paper wasp cluster at the studio. Never in on plants!

I did see a tiny "mantid fly" on milkweed earlier this summer. What an interesting creature!
