Bruce Bird
My first mammoth ivory carving is done. I just have to make the base. The eyes are made from argillite . A carver friend gave me the book . Great book ! Anyone else have a copy ? The letter opener is 11 inches long . Bruce

Bruce Bird
Hi Dan Don't know what building you are talking obout . This is how I've been carving for awhile now . My insperation comes in from different dierections all the time . While I was looking at the splinterd chunk of ivory that I had , the idea of a letter opener from a curved section popped into my head . This is the result . I like carving open mouths with the tounge showing . It adds a level of detail . I use very small bits and go at it slowly .
Michiel
Very well done! @ DAN: I think you are thinking of art deco - there are some buildings in NY with that style/design!
Christophe
Hi Bruce, Well done. About the book you are mentionning, is it just a catalogue of different work or is there any technical aspect part? Take Care Christophe

Bruce Bird
Thanks for your comments . I sure intend to do more ivory carvings . Christophe, the book is more historial than technical . It does explain how the sailors did scrimshaw in the whaleboats with limited tools . Lots of photos , it was printed in 1975 . Bruce
