tsterling
Here are a couple of ancient netsuke in honor of fall and Halloween from my early carving days, - could explain why I still have them... The tub of pumkins is boxwood and osage orange (the tub). The other is a kagamibuta style in antler with ebony inlays, boxwood ojime.
Doug Sanders
Those are great Tom! There's a much different feel to them than examples you've shown of more recent work. In particular, the tub of pumpkins has a real So-o School of netsuke feel to it.
tsterling
Thanks, Doug! I've always liked the simple netsuke themes with vegetables and small animals - especially the Iwami and So schools. Unfortunately they don't always hold a lot of sway with collectors of contemporary carvers, especially American collectors. They seem to want carvings a little more "busy," shall we say? Doug Sanders
appreciation of subtlety can be a rare gift, especially as you say, with Americans. My soapbox for the day.
