I've been thinking for a while that animated gifs are a great way to give a 3D feel to 2D images. Just a 2 image GIF can give you a feel for an object the is hard to achieve with standard photography. My examples are a bit crude, but I think the leaf nose bat GIF gives you a nice idea of how light falls on the surface of the wood. A 360 degree view might be really effective too.
