This is a Taniwha (pronounced tanifaa) curled around it's egg.

The whole design is completely untraditional, while at the same time being very unmistakeably Maori.

Two halves of solid bone glued together along the centreline, paua eyes. (That's a darker abalone type.)

I love that Yuri. It reminds me of Okos, which were little containers that held the pigment for Ta moko. They were very well carved as they were tapu, as everything was associated with the carved arts. But Ta moko especially tapu. Very nice.
