Imperial rhodonite chain

Recommended Posts

rhchain4.jpg.c9df6454ef61b724a2f55483b5bf4282.jpgMy first chain, jade is the preferred stone for these but my idea was to carve one in a stone that has not been done before, its very hard and fine grain rhodonite, still in progress.

Hello Michael,

You have succeeded in carving the chain!  Such patience and restraint you have especially as the materials become thinner.  This stone is such a lovely color and appears to be translucent as well.  Thank you for posting the images.

Thanks Janel, it is very translucent, a very challenging carving, rhodonite is not as tough as jade and is more prone to fracture, but this piece is the best I have carved, still quite surprised it stayed in one piece, the next stage is sanding and polishing, takes easily as long as the rough carving stage.

I can understand the time that it takes for sanding and polishing.  One must especially draw upon patience during this stage to achieve the final, flawless gleam.

Yes Janel, the final polishing stages can be demanding and this chain is very difficult getting at all those little tricky spots, finally finished.

Thank you for showing the completed piece.  I do admire your patience with attending to the complexities of carving and polishing chain links.  The color and luminosity is marvelous against the green jade background.

Are you going to launch into a more simple piece next?

Thanks Janel, yes I think I will move on from chains, they look great when finished but they are so labor intensive, I still need to attach a cord or chain, may do a custom plated cord either in black or red.
