Jim Kelso
Beautiful, Bob. Nice details especially in the difficult ricasso area.
Dick Bonham
Beautiful! I love the carving and the gold inlay. Dick
Janel
Lovely! Can you tell us about the background texture? It is subtle and interesting. Janel
robert weinstock
Hi all, and thanks for the compliments. The background texture is actually the pattern in the steel. I didn't make the steel (Ed Schempp did). After I finished the surface, I etch it with ferric chloride, and the pattern shows up like magic. The ricasso area was especially difficult on this knife. There's a hole surrounded by a leaf pattern.
Doug Sanders
I'm curious as to what makes the ricasso difficult to engrave/engineer. (attempting to build my knowledge of knife connoiseurship smiley) -Doug
robert weinstock
Hi Doug, Ricassos aren't inherently difficult to carve, but this one was because I had to go from a circle to a bevel around it. It was sifficult to make a smooth transition between the two. (add smilie of Bob sweating bullets)
Doug Sanders
Thanks. I know exactly what you mean re: a flat area to a bevel. Tough to get one's grey matter around the geometry sometimes.
