Tonkotsu

Hi,

Here is an interesting Japanese tobacco set of Emma-o with polychromed relief carving and glass eyes. The reverse is an Oni which lifts off to open the box. The main body ia 1 3/4" thick section of bamboo faced with wood. I thought an old Japanese painted piece would be of interest. The netsuke carvers also created tobacco boxes and pipe holders.

Hello Dick,

you got me there, but only because I'm hungry. I thought you'd written "tonkatsu"

Interesting piece though, are the painted areas lacquer ( urushi )?

regards, Ford

Hi Ford,

Yes, the painted areas are lacquer. I thought that this was an unusual tobacco box since most are carved then finished natural. I also thought the style unusual and worth sharing. A tonkatsu fillet would be tasty. I am going to Japan in the fall so I'll be enjoying some good food.

Dick
