It probably isn't as good as boxwood (which I haven't tried yet) but works well for the free form things I do. It was a chunk left over, I was told, from a school refurbishment project. BTW this is the "rear" view. I very slightly tinted the stand (also of willow) a lighter color than the natural color of the "figure". It takes a nice smooth finish using polyurethane.
