Dino
Hello again, Here my first small scale carving. Don't know if you can call it a netsuke, but at least it's small And of course: organic! It was a center piece of a mammoth tusk. The black spot is the nerve or whatever mammoths had in the center of their tusks...It had some cracks from the very beginning so I tried to carve it that it holds together nevertheless. Seems to be strong enough. Still sanding is a problem. My finest grid is 400, probably not enough for these small things. Or maybe I have to do some more. What do I use as finish for mammoth ivory? Just polish with lamb wool? Size: 3cm x 2,3cm x 1,5cm (2,5cm ~ 1 inch) The coin is a European 2 cent Thx for looking, Dino Sorry, my camera is not suited for close ups... rmiller3
Beautifully done. Guess the nerve hole makes it a netsuke. When I look at it, I think of "The Burghers of Calais" by Rodin only in miniature. Funny how those things work. Ralph
Dino
Hi Ralph, Thanks for the interesting comparison! But one can guess, I wasn't actually inspired by it Just a first try with mammoth in the way I usually work with my roots. Very interesting and quite different though. I will do more of this for I still have some tusk lying around here... Dino
